Taupō Waka Ama Club

About us

Taupō Club offers a unique whanau (extended family) atmosphere allowing parents, grandparents, children and mokopuna (grandchildren) to paddle together, with an emphasis of promoting wellness in many forms within our community of Taupō.
Unlike many sports, Waka Ama is steeped in the powerful history and traditions of Waka sailing. Waka Ama is therefore, not just a sport but also a vehicle our Club utilises to enhance Local Identity, Personal Pride and Community Spirit with a primary focus on the positive development of our Rangatahi, (Young People) as Future Leaders. This is reflected in the Club@s Values and Tikanga (the set of beliefs associated with the practices and procedures we follow in conducting the affairs of our sport) that underpin it. The Club@s statements and objectives will continue to honour the cultures and heritage that make our sport unique and outlines what we will do to ensure it continues to flourish as a community asset in coming years.
Values of this Club are:
(a) Manaakitanga We encourage the practice of reciprocity through sharing of ourselves and of our resources, nurturing all people and accepting our differences,
(b) Whanaungatanga Is our sense of belonging, identity and collective strength, not only through kinship / whakapapa but also being related to all within the Waka Ama community.
(c) Hauora We support and promote the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of all our participants.
(d) Tū Tangata We are accountable for our actions. We have respect for each other, for our waka and our environment. We stand proud in our integrity and passion.
